I’ve had a lot of fun recently replying to e-mails and phone calls about what gun to buy and where to get a holster. We’re really fortunate to have Don Brown shooting with us. “Coho,” as he’s called in the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) and Cowboy Fast Draw Association (CFDA) circles, Don’s a skilled holster maker. He and his wife Shelly own Ted Blocker holsters in Tigard and can build pretty much whatever you want. And given that he’s familiar with CFDA rules, he’ll make sure it’s something you can shoot competively with here and elsewhere. Plus there’s nothing like handling something before you actually put your money down for it, right?

I’ve got a fully carved SASS drig that Don made and it’s beautiful.

About a dozen folks turned out to try out different guns and holsters at our first shoot and orientation to Cowboy Fast Draw, as practiced in the Cowboy Fast Draw Association (CFDA). Don Brown (alias “the Coho Kid”) brought a number of designs from Ted Blocker–he’ll be donating a few to the club after they get matching belts in a variety of sizes for our “Townsfolk Alley”–and Gregg Townsley (call me “Ronin”) brought his AWA Peacekeepers and a Ruger race gun.
Everyone had a great time. And good discussion was heard about the targets (we’re picking up two the first week of May in Idaho), discussing the construction of our shooting range, and the new shooting schedule.

techniques and the club schedule.
Next time, maybe some chairs. And some coffee. And maybe some water. And a few more folks wearing period clothing. We do this right and we might actually get L Bar T Bison Ranch owner, Tom Epler, to tell us where the bathroom is!

Just a quick public thank-you for our first three corporate sponsors thus far for Oregon Fast Draw. We’re still just beginning, though I’ll be posting the date for our first informal “Cowboy Fast Draw School” in the next day or so, providing an opportunity for our first informal shoot.
Folks in the area who haven’t tried cowboy fast draw will have the opportunity to do so at the L Bar T Bison Ranch in Forest Grove. Seasoned pistol and handgun safety instructors, as well as a couple of CFDA cowboy fast draw folks, will be available to introduce new people to this fast growing sport.
Now the kudos!
