The Key to Getting Better, it Seems to Me

February 28th, 2008

I don’t get out much, given my martial arts business in Sherwood, Oregon and our church and community involvement in nearby Forest Grove, but the seven long months of rain-drenched darkness, punctuated by brighter days that only sunny Nevadans can understand, takes a significant toll on us. So my wife Nancy and I do what we can to put on a fresh face and stoke the happy home fires.

More recently we decided to include Cowboy Fast Draw shooting in our schedule, traveling to whatever contests and locations we can afford.

We took a trip south to Fernley last weekend to soak up some light and found a happy crew of Cowboy Fast Draw shooters at the home of Cal and Dinah Eilrich on Farm District Road.

Cowboy Fast Draw Association (CFDA) Rules

February 21st, 2008

You wanna be a gunfighter?  You want to test your reaction speed, is that right bunky?  Then click here, or here if you’re a cattleman and don’t care for sheep and are just looking to have a little fun.

But if you want to “skin that smoke wagon,” as Wyatt Earp is supposed to have said prior to asking “or are you just going to stand there and bleed?” then click here for the latest CFDA rules.  And get yourself to one of our practice sessions, held monthly here in Forest Grove!

SHOOT FIRST TIME FREE, MEMBERSHIPS BUILD CLUB

February 21st, 2008

Nobody makes any money organizing a Fast Draw Club! And that’s a problem because there are significant expenses, for both the club and, to a lesser part, the individual cowboy.

A cowboy is going to have to get himself a 45 caliber single action sixgun, and maybe a hat and some boots. And join the Cowboy Fast Draw Association (CFDA). But to have a club, the cowboys are going to have to have much, much more.

There’s the CFDA Club Sanction Fee, which is $500 for the first year and $250 every year after. Sanction fees provide much needed insurance for the club’s activities, as well as other benefits, including the ability to participate in a Cowboy Fast Draw match just about anywhere in the United States. Okay, there’s a few states that are still struggling to get their act together, and despite Oregon’s having two clubs, we’ve still got a ways to go. Which goes to the importance of collecting a little bit of money along the way.

Then there’s timers and targets–about $1500 for two lanes, additional lanes mean additional dollars–canopies in case of rain (duh, right? it’s Oregon), advertising and other support, and so on. It’s not a cheap endeavor.

Dalles Inside Range

The Fort Dalles Defenders shoot both inside and outside, depending on the weather. Pictured here: the inside range at the Senior Center.

The CFDA clubs in Oregon each have their own membership dues and expenses.

Club fees for the Fort Dalles Defenders are kept pretty minimal, given that Cowboy Fast Draw shooting is one of the many disciplines at The Dalles Pistol and Rifle Club. Membership at the club is $65 a year. And National Rifle Association membership is mandatory, as the Ford Dalles Defenders’ insurance is provided to the range through their NRA affiliation.

Membership with the Orygun Gunfighters is $45 a year (note raise in membership fee since 2009), as the club’s insurance program is purchased through the Cowboy Fast Draw Association. A $200 Life Membership is available as well, which provides the shooter with a limited edition club badge with the shooter’s alias engraved on it! Members who have them value the beauty of their Life Member badges!

Orygun Gunfighter annual memberships renew in January, no matter when an individual joins. Monthly contest shoots cost $20 and practice shoots are only $5. Members use their own ammo–C & R Wax Bullets are to be used by everyone on the range as they’re easier on the safety net–and should an individual club member not want to load their own ammunition, club ammo is available for rent for $5. National Rifle Association membership is recommended but optional.

Organizational Meetings to be held March 14 and 16!

February 21st, 2008

Well we’ve done it. Oregon Fast Draw, LLC is a registered entity, promoting the sport of fast draw in our state. And the appropriate “Assumed Business Names” have been applied for as well–you’ll have to wait to hear them, we’re checking with our friends at the L Bar T Ranch–now it’s time for a meeting!

If you’re at all interested in the fast growing sport of Cowboy Fast Draw, then we’d like to encourage you to attend a brief formational meeting March 14, at 6 PM, at the Pacific Avenue Grill in Forest Grove. “The Grill,” as locals call it, is on the right as you enter Forest Grove, just a block past Main Street, has a reasonable beer and food selection and is the perfect place for our first meeting.

For those of you who want to Map Quest the location click here or call the restaurant at (503) 992-1800 for directions.

A second meeting, for those who can’t make the first, will be held on Sunday, March 16 at 12 noon, at Coleman’s Restaurant, on the Wilson River Highway (Route 6)  in Gales Creek, Oregon.  Our favorite Sunday brunch spot, you’ll enjoy the food.  Hopefully, we’ll see a couple of the legendary Vernonia shooters I’ve been hearing so much about.

I’ll be making a short presentation on Cowboy Fast Draw and the CFDA, share a little bit about my poor performance at the recent shoot in Fernley Nevada (!), talk about memberships, describe the gear necessary to start and so on. You’ll have a great time, meet a few new friends, and maybe explore your hidden “cowboy side” as well.

See you there! There are a half-dozen folks waiting to meet you already. Don’t be the last guy (or gal) to sign on!
