While Nancy and I were entertaining ourselves by watching the TNT made for TV series “Into the West,” Tommy’s bison buddies were making miniatures of themselves just a few feet from our fast draw range! Thought you’d want to know…

Outrider (2nd) and Bad Eye Lefty (1st) standing a little too close to the buffalo at our May 2010 match at the L Bar T Bison Ranch

With only five shooters this month, we ran two lanes so as to practice hand judging for the upcoming matches in The Dalles and Canyon City, Oregon. Both shooters were using the heavier, “old model” Ruger Vaqueros.

1. Bad Eye Lefty .452

2. Outrider .502

3. Coho Kid .587

4. Orygun Outlaw .515

5. The Rev. W. W. Ronin .498

APRIL 17, 2010 at the L Bar T Bison Ranch in Forest Grove, OR

We had ten shooters! And we had a special guest, CD Tom who brought the new CFDA scoring software and helped to score the match. The creator of the computer program used by the Single Action Shooting Society to score their largest matches, Tom has contributed a great product for CFDA clubs to use. Not only will we be using the software to score the Oregon “End of Trail” State Match in August, but as we get larger we’ll need to use it on a monthly basis. Place and fastest scores follow; the match was shot in the “no X out” timed format.

1. Gentleman Jim .402

2. Oregon Ranger (guest) .961

3. Orygun Outlaw .539

4. Kid Creggar .390

5. Bad Eye Lefty .502

6. Coho Kid .562

7. Oregon Cowboy (guest) .425

8. Outrider .602

9. The Rev. W. W. Ronin .561

10. George Uh .579

MARCH 20, 2010 at the L Bar T Bison Ranch, Forest Grove, OR

A blustery day at the range at Tom and Lori’s place. But a good time was had by all, particularly by Kid Creggar and our club’s 2010 Shootist Award winner, Bad Eye Lefty, who duked it out for first and second place, despite the strong challenge brought by Gentleman Jim.

1. Kid Creggar .369

2. Bad Eye Lefty .453

3. Gentleman Jim .397

4. Outrider .540

5. Oregon Ranger (guest) .688

6. Oregon Outlaw .523

7. The Rev. W. W. Ronin .503

FEBRUARY 10, 2010 at the L Bar T Bison Ranch, Forest Grove OR

As this was Gentleman Jim’s first match as member and he brought the whole fam damily with him to shoot, we thought we’d shoot an extra one X match. Imagine our surprise when the match placement turned out exactly the same. We shot a two-hour timed match for the main match and a standard 1X elimination match for the the second.

1. Gentleman Jim .393

2. Oregon Cowboy (guest) .408

3. Kid Creggar .373

4. Bad Eye Lefty .439

5. Oregon Outlaw .493

6. Oregon Ranger (guest) .514

An extra 1X match gave the following interesting results:

1. Gentleman Jim .391

2. Oregon Cowboy (guest) .403

3. Kid Creggar .387

4. Bad Eye Lefty .495

5. Oregon Outlaw .500

6. Oregon Ranger (guest)

JANUARY 16, 2010 at the L Bar T Bison Ranch, Forest Grove, OR

Scores yet to be posted for this two-hour timed match, save the placement of the first two shooters. Great to see Cooter there, who braved wintery roads and weather from Sweet Water, Oregon, and to have the Reverend W. W. Ronin’s participation as well, after his move to St. Helens, Oregon.

1. Kid Creggar .357

2. Bad Eye Lefty .405

3. Outrider .393

4. The Rev. W. W. Ronin .485

5. Coho Kid .515

6. Cooter .610

We’ve had a good time the last few months shooting for a determined time–typically two hours, or there abouts–and then adding up the Xs to determine the winner. But while it’s allowed everyone to maximize their match time and thus benefited the lower-placing shooters, its hurt the club’s better shooters and often, because of ties, resulted in prolonged contests at the end of the day to see who scores in the middle of the pack or even last.

A quick reading of the Cowboy Fast Draw Association “Elimination Contest” rules makes the point. And we’re grateful to the club’s members who pointed it out to us recently:

“Contestants are paired only by random drawing. Until the Elimination Factor…is met, rounds will be drawn by matching winners with winners and losers with losers, from the previous round (this helps to keep contestants from being matched with the same person until the Elimination Factor is met, however since the drawings are random, it is still possible to be matched with the same person after the 2 rounds after the Elimination Factor is passed are random drawing only…Ties from contestants being eliminated from the match in the same round are broken by the fastest shot they fired in their last round.”

While we’re not totally clear on the changes at this point, and it will take some time to retrain our club’s score keepers, future club scoring will mean the following:

Winners will, unless otherwise announced, be paired with winners. And losers with losers, until the Elimination Factor is passed. (The “Elimination Factor” is determined by the number of Xs our club is shooting on a given day.)

Where placement ties are evident, the winner will be determined by the fastest score he or she shot during a given match, not by additional shooting.

We’re going to make every effort to start our matches on time, to keep them going in a business-like manner, and to extend (when we can) matches to include a fourth X.

The CFDA allows individual clubs to make changes to its scoring methodologies with prior announcement, and it’s this writer’s thought that we want to experience all the possibilities. But we’re excited at shooting matches on a more footing with scoring that our members will experience at other clubs!

Jon “Blackjack” Long tells us that details are firming up for the Oregon State championship, “The Gunfight at Trail’s End.” Co-owner of the Lengendary Idaho Shootists and “ramrod” for the first Oregon State Championship, Blackjack notes that folks in Canyon City are really getting into the CFDA-sanctioned event. “They have confirmed a Friday night music in the park event for us and a Saturday morning pancake feed.” Cowboy Fast Draw Association (CFDA) folks like to eat and eating opportunities don’t appear to be lacking for the August 13-15 event.

This first Oregon State Championship is sponsored by three CFDA clubs–the Orygun Gunfighters in Forest Grove, Oregon, the Fort Dalles Defenders in The Dalles, Oregon and the Idaho Shootists in Idaho City, Idaho. All three clubs are part of the CFDA’s “Northwest Territory.” While we’ve had a few sponsors sign on, there’s still room for more. Cutoff date for sponsors is June 1st. If you’d like to have a spot on the goody bag or T-shirt–designs haven’t been finalized–now’s the time to get on board. Let Blackjack (currenttech@earthlink.net) or Ronin (gregg@greggtownsley.com) know. They’re quite excited as to how things are beginning to shape up!

You can sign-up to compete at The Gunfight at Trail’s End by going directly to the Cowboy Fast Draw Association website and clicking on the events list.

Well, while John may be new to the Cowboy Fast Draw sport, he spent his adult years as an educator. And this tape sure shows it. We highly recommend it to both new and seasoned fast draw shooters alike, as he breaks down the advice of some of the sports finer competitors into easy to understand advice.

John shot the video at the 2009 Cowboy Fast Draw Association (CFDA) World Championship and consequently covers a wide variety of styles and advice. You can order his DVD online.

After some discussion, we’ve decided to use a point system in determining the winner of our annual Shootist Award. Previously, the thinking was that we’d simply tally up the matches an individual won, and give the award to the individual who won the most. But a shoot-off in January illustrated that it was quite possible for their to be a tie–we had a three-way tie that needed resolution.

“Orie Gunn” took the club’s first annual Shootist award
after a three-way tie was broken in January

The CFDA Marshals took up the issue of their own annual award at the recent gathering in Fernley, Nevada. And a new point system was recently suggested and adopted. While the decision had a few detractors, at its core smaller clubs such as ours were helped by making all state and regional championships of equal value, no matter what the size or location.

Our club marshal, W. W. Ronin is suggesting that we begin using the state championship values at our February shoot, computing the values once a year. 30 points will be awarded first place, 27 to second, 25 to third, 23 to fourth, 21 to fifth and 20 to sixth. But he’d like some input from those more mathematically inclined.

The point values will encourage club members to shoot more often (and accurately!) and promote the opportunity of just about every shooter in our club, who is shooting well and regularly, to take the annual prize. The point system, as adopted by the CFDA marshalls, can be seen in the November 2008 Gunslingers Gazette online.

Fact is, we’ve spent way too much time on this. Dirtbag’s tools, Orie Gunn, Bad Eye Lefty, the Amity Kid, and Ronin’s time, not to speak of material contributions by Tatonka and others, it’s simply time to get these flats done.

So mid-November, the Amity Kid loaded up the paint and wood into Ronin’s truck and headed to the town called Amity. (There is one. If you don’t know, it’s right past McMinnville, about 45 minutes from the range we’re building in Forest Grove.) And there, in the heated living room of the Amity Kid, the club’s town props are being finished.

The Amity Kid and Bad Eye Lefty eyeing the back of one of the club’s
new props, prior to their leaving the L Bar T barn in November

We’re not showing the finished project yet, but things are shaping up. And the Amity Kid tells us that they were finished for our shoot in January. Given the winter range’s current problems–Tom is working through an arduous and expensive permit process to repair damage caused by the winter snows–we hope to set them up and enjoy them for the first time in April or May.

The Kid sends a picture of a few of the buildings in progress!

We’re right proud of the Kid for taking hold of this project. And for everyone else that have helped! Tatonka has picked up a bunch of barrels for us and we hear tell of a saddle or two. With a little help from an electrician–we’re thinking we could do with a couple of more lights–we’re going to have a great new look to our shooting beginning this spring!
